How long can I work?- Camps start directly after orientation. Each camp is one- or two-weeks long, and an average tutor works for a total of 4-5 weeks. There are two factors that will determine how long you work for: (1) your performance and (2) availability of work, depending on the number of camps. The number varies from week to week, some periods (July 20-August 20th) being far quieter than others. The number of tutors we require also varies from week to week, and work may not be available for consecutive weeks.
-
During your period of employment, you may be placed on-hold. This means that ACLE would like to retain your services as a tutor but doesn’t have work for you until (almost always) the following week. Most tutors who are put on-hold for one week use this time to travel independently or may be invited to stay another week with their host family if they are already in the field. Those tutors who find themselves on-hold for two consecutive weeks will receive a small monetary contribution plus food and accommodation. If you instead choose to travel during your period on-hold, then you are responsible for your accommodation and food. When should I book my return flight? - Tutors generally first decide how many weeks they would like to work. They usually have a back-up plan for the quiet period or in the event that camps are not available, i.e. they travel or visit family or friends. Some airlines give you the option of flying into one country/city and leaving from another. They also may allow you to change your departure date free of charge—ask about their policy when purchasing your ticket. Tutors crossing the Atlantic into Europe have found it cheaper to fly into the UK and then take a Ryanair flight (www.ryanair.com) to Milan (followed by a 5-hour journey to Sanremo) or to Geneva (followed by a 2-3 hour journey to Sanremo) or an EasyJet flight (www.easyjet.com) to Nice, France (followed by a 1.5-2 hour journey to Sanremo). If arriving in Nice, you need to catch the bus to the Nice Ville train station. If there is no direct train to Sanremo, you can purchase a ticket for the first train to Ventimiglia, Italy and then purchase another ticket for Sanremo in Ventimiglia. Information on trains in Italy can be found at www.ferroviedellostato.it
- It is essential that you book your return ticket no earlier than the Sunday morning after the Friday you finish camp in order to allow yourself adequate travel time to reach your departure point.
Do I have to attend orientation? - It is imperative that you attend an orientation before you are sent to work in a camp! You must arrive in Sanremo the day before your orientation. Orientations will be held starting May 31st and June 7th and during two other weeks during the summer months (dates to be confirmed). You will learn specific, essential skills and gain a good understanding of how ACLE camps work. You will start your first camp directly after orientation.
